The Banker

First published in January 1926 The Banker is one of the world's leading financial journals providing a truly global perspective through its coverage of over 120 countries during the year. News articles include coverage of retail and investment banking, capital markets, FX & treasury, global securities services and banking technology, as well as country and regional surveys.

In June 1970 The Banker published its first listing of Top World Banks, ranking the top 300 banks in the world by assets. This became an annual event with the number of banks listed increasing to 500 in June 1980. With the introduction of Tier 1 capital as an internationally accepted measure of a banks strength following the Basel agreement of 1988, The Banker started to rank banks by Tier 1 capital and increased the number of banks listed to 1000 in the July issue of 1989. The month of publication of the World Bank listing had changed to July in 1985 to facilitate the incorporation of the latest Japanese bank results (year end 31st March) into the listing. From 1989 onwards The Banker introduced a series of regional listings to further illustrate the development of these banking sectors. The Banker maintains a database of some 6500 world banks past and present.
